A Survival Guide to Middle School

By Dishita Singh

Going into middle school can be challenging for some people, and there are many obstacles. That’s why BTL has interviewed some students from Landon to make sure you have a great time!

I Wish I Knew:

We asked some students what they wished they knew when they first came into Landon, and we hope it helps our new students!

“I would want to get to know more clubs than I did when I first came, because in the beginning, I only knew a few, but as the year went on, I learned about more clubs. Then, I joined them in 7th grade.” –Ojasvi Labhi, 8th Grader

“It’s not as scary as you think it is, and there’s not as much homework as your elementary teachers say. Make sure you use the school map, I’m in 7th grade and I still can’t find my way around! You may end up as friends with unexpected people.” –Claudia Santavicca, 7th Grader

Get Involved:

Here are some clubs, sports, and activities recommended by Landon students.

“I recommend Science Olympiad, LEAF club, and speech & debate. I think Science Olympiad is good, because it can help you excel in science and you get to achieve lots of incredible things, because you can go to a lot of science related competitions that help you know more about others and different schools where you can share your knowledge about science. Also, LEAF club is great, because you can have an environmental impact on the school, save endangered pollinators, and you get to do fun beach clean-ups to keep beaches clean (because they get really dirty) I honestly like to plant and save nature, so I really enjoyed this club. The last one is speech and debate, because it can help you talk in groups and share your voice, and it’s really fun!”

–Ojasvi Labhi, 8th Grader

“Speech and Debate is a good club to join because it can improve your communication skills. Also, when you get into 7th grade, try to get into the Ambassador program and NJHS if you think you’ll like the experience!”

–Harini Nandakumar, 7th Grader

Advice From Upperclassmen:

“Make sure you plan things ahead of time, because the teachers are much stricter on due dates and assignments. Also make sure you frequently check the full school team because it has most of the important information about the school.”

-Kavin Vignesh, 8th Grader

“Make sure you have a plan or organizer for your work, because the workload gets heavier in 8th grade and you won’t be that used to it. Be respectful to your peers. Try to join more clubs and put yourself out there because 8th grade is your last year and you want to make sure you have enough opportunities.”

-Aashi Jain, 8th Grader

Athlete Spotlight:

Landon offers football, cheerleading, girls’ volleyball, cross-country, girls’ and boys’ soccer, girls’ and boys’ basketball, girls’ softball, baseball, girls’ and boys’ track & field, and girls’ and boys’ swim & dive. In this, athletes tell us about their sports and more!

“Athletics are a way to make new friends and experience new things. You have to remember that it’s a new thing for everyone at some point, and that it’s ok to mess up”

-Sophia Ruisi, 7th grade Landon Athlete

“I would recommend trying out, it is super fun, and you get to know more people. It will be hot! If you don’t make a team, it’s ok, there’s always next year. Just have fun, and don’t be mean to others.”

-Stanley Myers, 7th grade Landon Athlete

Club Spotlight:

We have many clubs at Landon, but not all of them are well-known, so here is a focus on some of Landon’s clubs.

“I want students to know that when they come to lunch bunch book club, we don’t make them read a specific book, like other book clubs. They get to choose what book they want to read.”

-Ms. Mayer, Librarian

“PRISM is a student-led interest club where students can practice hobbies with their friends. Some years we have dancers, some years makeup, and every year video games. The club has evolved a lot since I started it 7 years ago, as it has more members.”

-Mr. Isicoff, 7th Grade ELA

Remember, you don’t have to figure out everything on your own. The best way to adjust is to involve yourself in new experiences and ask for help. Make sure you give yourself time to make those adjustments, make new memories, and enjoy the time you have at Landon!
