A Dark Room

By Pugazh S.

What do you mean, there’s a ghost in this school? You expect me to believe some ghost caught a student cheating? Students at my school are getting away with worse things and nothing ever happens to them. Maybe it’s just a Halloween hoax around the whole school that came from teachers, so students don’t do the wrong thing.

I’m sitting in the cafeteria when I accidentally spilled my water.

Suddenly, everything just went black. I stand there in fright, not only did I get my pants wet, but I can’t see a single thing. It was all just black. I called out for anyone; nothing, or so I thought. I heard a faint voice of some sort. Relieved, I attempt to go towards the student. I’m not really the brightest student at my school, which explains why I tried to maneuver in pitch black darkness in a cafeteria full of tables and chairs. I immediately fell over what I believe is a table. My head hit the ground and although everything was already pitch black, this time it felt like I was knocked out. I can’t describe the feeling, since I cannot feel anything.

I suddenly woke up to a splash of water on my face. Startled, I got up almost immediately to a bright blinding light. The light hurt my eyes a little bit, considering the room was pitch black. My head hurt even more, however. I go to feel my head, but as my hand reaches toward the top, a hand stops me. It was the one holding the flashlight directly into my eyes.

Then a voice started to speak to me; “Don’t touch it, it took me a lot of paper towels to hold up the wound. It will all fall off again.” A wound? Surely, I could not have hit my head that hard on the floor… at least I think so. I measly try to get up, then immediately fall down. This time the person caught me and slowly sat me down on the floor. I realized it was a girl; I couldn’t make out her face since it was kind of dark and the blinding flashlight wasn’t helping with anything. All I knew was that she was kind enough to help me through all of this. I politely asked for her name as she carefully and gently put the paper towels back on my head (it fell while I tried to stand up). She says it’s complicated and that I should just call her Cheese instead. Very odd name, but since my head was really killing me, I just agreed. She later explains after applying the paper towels that I have been knocked out for a long time now, almost 3 hours she thinks. She is really happy to finally see me awake considering that it has been 3 hours in pitch darkness with just a flashlight. I ask why she hasn’t looked for an escape yet. If I were stuck here with a flashlight, I would look for an exit.

She tells me that she is really afraid of the dark however, because I was wounded, she pushed herself and took a flashlight from her bag she managed to find in this darkness and went off to look for paper towels to cover my head since we were still in the cafeteria apparently (she had a flashlight because today was lights-out reading day). I found myself flattered; she really did all of that to save me. But then it made me think, if she went out of her way to find paper towels, couldn’t have just found an exit? I ask her this and she just stares at me very blankly. I guess I’m not the only dumb one in the room.

Suddenly, we heard something else move in the room. Cheese comes closer to me in fear. Then an unsettling screech comes from whatever was there. Cheese points her flashlight at where we think the noise came from. The figure appears to be a huge ghostlike figure. It immediately begins to hurl towards us, and we turn the other way and begin to run away. Since I had most of the cafeteria memorized, I led her to where I believed the exit was. The thing was chasing us even faster now, however; we managed to find the exit.

We went through the door to the outside, and everything was back to normal. We transferred schools immediately and never saw each other again…
